Sunshine Week

This is 'Sunshine Week', an initiative spearheaded by the American Society of News Editors to educate the public about the importance of open government and the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy.

If you live in the Detroit area, and even if you don't, you certainly are aware of what can happen when officials abuse their power in office and try to keep it hidden from the public.

A friend suggested that I blog about this topic this week.  Well, there is plenty to say about hampering public access to information.  Where to begin?  What are we afraid the public will find out?  It's PUBLIC information.

Officials bristle at the mere suggestion of criticism.  They love to tell us how hard they work.  Here is a suggestion:  Just shut up and do something of value.  If it is really successful, you will not have to brag about how hard you worked.  People will seek out those who make accomplishments.

Rather than rant on about this, I will just quote Socrates: 'The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.'
